Dr. Pavel Bělík

Mathematics

My first teaching experience was in the mid 1990s when I started teaching at the University of Minnesota as a teaching assistant. I then taught some courses, including a graduate Numerical Analysis course, as a postdoc before starting teaching at the University of St. Thomas. Eventually, in 2008 I ended up at my current institution, Augsburg College.

Dr.Suzanne Dorée

Mathematics

Suzanne Dorée is Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she has taught since 1989. Her research interests include graph theory and recreational discrete mathematics. She is also active in the scholarship of teaching and learning with special focus on curricular reform in developmental and introductory mathematics, in which capacity she now serves as a consultant to the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas-Austin. Her work on curriculum includes a contextually-based active learning approach developmental algebra course taught at Augsburg since 1994 and more recently at several other colleges. She has also developed an inquiry-based course in discrete mathematics.

Long active in the Mathematical Association of America, Dr. Dorée currently chairs the MAA Council on Program and Students and is the chair-elect of the MAA Congress in which capacity she will serve on the MAA Board of Directors. She frequently runs professional development workshops for new mathematicians (and old) on active learning, teaching conjecturing (and other topics in inquiry-based learning), and mathematical speaking. She also serves as an external consultant to Mathematics Department Program Reviews. Dr. Dorée has a B.A. in Mathematics from University of Delaware and both the M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from University of Wisconsin.

As part of the Summit-P management team, Dr. Dorée helps plan organizational meetings, supports project dissemination, coordinates the calculus cluster, serves as a curriculum reform and active learning expert, and maintains connections with the MAA. She also is the Principal Investigator on Augsburg University's efforts to renovate the calculus sequence and study the impact of the project on both faculty and students.

Dr. Stella Hofrenning

Economics

I am an Associate Professor in Economics at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN. I teach Principles and Intermediate Microeconomics, Research Methods in Economics: Econometrics and Management Science. Prior to teaching I worked as an economist at both the federal and state level. Augsburg is a liberal arts college that encourages interdisciplinary work so I enjoy working with my colleagues across disciplines. For example, I serve as a mentor for a program that provides an experiential, interdisciplinary learning opportunity for STEM and economics/business students in evaluating the market potential for biomedical products and technologies by Mayo Clinic inventors.

The SUMMIT-P project at Augsburg will renew the 3-semester calculus courses by integrating content and developing materials that are more relevant to the partner disciplines of economics and business and that is very exciting! In addition, I will serve as a Co-PI on the main project to support collaborative efforts in economics and business across institutions in working with the Curriculum Foundations Project report, communicate regularly with the project team and disseminate information.

In my free time, I like to bake with my daughter.

Dr. Joan Kunz

Chemistry

I started teaching chemistry as an undergraduate student, as a TA for a general chemistry lab at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1974. As a graduate student (University of Wisconsin-Madison), I was a TA for general chemistry and later advanced inorganic chemistry. After earning a PhD, I taught lecture and labs (mostly at Augsburg College) in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemistry for nurses as well as a variety of courses intended for non-science major students, and philosophy of science, science ethics, technical speaking, and history of chemistry. “Content” continues to be the most important factor for courses that I teach for chemistry majors. Overtime, more affective dimensions of science (rather than content) have become more important for courses for non-science majors. I also direct undergraduate research in chemistry.

Dr. Jody Sorensen

Mathematics

I teach a wide variety of mathematics courses serving all of Augsburg’s students.  I have taught basic skills and general education courses, introductory courses like calculus, and upper level courses for our majors.  I’ve also taught courses for our education majors, and for the honors program.  I enjoy the excitement and creativity generated by teaching a wide variety of courses.
